Compasses

Postby Carlo-NED20 on Wed Mar 31, 2010 9:52 am

I know the compass issue has been discussed before , but as techniques strives on and I am looking in to what compass would give a good value for money ratio I am making a new thread.

Class rules state:
====================================
(numbers 72-75 are not used)
76. Fittings and Equipment
Hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical devices (including instruments) are prohibited.
But electronic timing devices and magnetic and electronic compasses are permitted,
provided they have no data correlation capabilities.
(number 77 is not used)
====================================

What does this mean for the compass?
What is defined to be an electronic compass?
What are “…data correlation capabilities” in this context??

E.g. Velocitek SC-01 is an electronic compass using GPS. It shows angles and has capabilities similar to the Tacktik racemaster. Because it has GPS it is also capable of showing speed an TRUE heading, as apposed to magnetic heading (which it also can show)

Any ideas, suggestions??

Speed or true heading are not allowed.

Magnetic heading and coördinates are allowed. Allthough I don't see the value of coördinates in the FD.

I think it's as simple as that, so that leaves out the Velocitek because it gives speed and true heading. The small Tack-Tick is ok because it doesn't.

The large Tack-Tick does give a difference between heading and previous heading, which would tell you when to tack. On past Worlds and Europeans the measurement committee decided to allow this compass only when the extra info was taped over.

Any other ideas on this matter?
