Who built medal winning FD's ?

Postby vcator on Thu Jan 28, 2010 8:32 pm

Is there anyone who can help me identify which of Rodney Pattersons boats were Hoare's ?, and the names of the boats ?

Let me explain . . . we are building a SplashPark in Christchurch, a facility for people of all ages to enjoy the simple pleasures of messing about in water. Sound familiar ?
Within the SplashPark there are features that represent elements synonymous. For example, we have a Well from which children can pump water - in Christchurch there is a fresh-water Well used by Iron Age people. We have a waterwheel – Christchurch has one of the oldest water mills. And we have a Bailey Bridge, the WWII bridge designed and developed in Christchurch.

The last feature will be a specially commissioned seat, celebrating Christchurch's link with the Olympics.

- Pattersons 1968 boat was built by Christchurch Boatbuilder Bob Hoare, but I’m not sure of the name of the boat ? Was it Supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus ? . . .and is that the correct spelling ?
- I think the 1972 boat was also built by Bob Hoare, but it would be helpful if someone could confirm that, and also the boats name ?
- I don’t think his 1976 boat was a Hoare, but again it would be helpful if someone could confirm that.

- Pete Allam was born in Christchurch, an FD crew in 1984 . . .what was the boat called that they won a bronze in 1984 ?

thank you for any help or insight that you may be able to give.

If you are passing Christchurch from May/June 2010, the SplashPark in on Quomps, Christchurch Quay, and will be a place of enjoyment for young and old. Who knows, it may even inspire people to sail an FD :-)

Tony knows everything about British FD's, but here's my understanding of Rodney's boats

1968 boat was a Bob Hoare, I think (Tony?) it was K168 and was named Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. That boat is - or was - on display at the Maritime Museum in Plymouth.

1972 boat was a Bob Hoare K 263. No idea where that is. I think it was named the same as K168.

1976 boat was also a Hoare, K300. That was my first FD, and I think now belongs to Andrew Hurst of Seahorse magazine. It was his intention to restore the boat to it's original state, but I'm not sure how far the project has got. It might be worth contacting Andrew. From what I remember of the certificate, that boat was actually named Superdocious, but Tony may be able to confirm.

So all three of Rodney's medal winning boats were built by Bob Hoare. Good luck with your project! I have a few photos somewhere of K300 as she was in the 90's when I owned her. If they're of interest I may be able to dredge them up!

As I was visiting the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth almost 6 years ago, I remembered they had one of the Pattisson boats on display. On a picture I took there was the sail number K 163 on it. There is also an article on their website:

In fact they had a fancy multimedia show beaming a short clip on Pattisons successes into the sails of his FD. Really cool stuff worth a visit.
BTW, tthe museum was also showing Ben Ainslies Laser he used in Sydney 2000 Games to beat Robert Scheidt Match-Race style...

Cheers,

Christian

That shows how much I know! I stand corrected. K163, not 168 and Falmouth not Plymouth! Still, I was close.
